Why are big red decks not respected among the Magic:the gathering community?

Red is the easiest color to be shut down by any kind of control, and since most decks have some kind of control in them mono red doesn't do to well in most cases. Also, mono red decks run out of steam fast, making them easy to pick off later in the game while you're trying to top deck your way through an impenetrable defense.
