To Australians, Why do people claim that the attack on Indian students is racist?

Why is every one calling the attack on Indian students racist? I was watching a show last night where Indians where calling Australians racists because some students were aulted. The attack on the Indian students was far from racist. Any one who has been to a train station at night knows that gangs of drunken youths will bash any one, regardless of race. Only the most ignorant people would believe that the attack was racially motivated. Why are the actions of a few hooligans a reflection on the Australian population as a whole? If you don't want to be attacked by gangs don't hang around train stations at night. In the last six months i've seen three fights and one stabbing with a broken bottle at train stations, but I never felt the need to brand all Australians racists because of them.
